To earn the ENERGY STAR, a home must meet strict guidelines for energy efficiency set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These homes are at least 15% more energy efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC), and include additional energy-saving features that typically make them 2030% more efficient than standard homes.

Any single or multi-family home three stories or less can earn the ENERGY STAR label if it has been verified to meet EPA's guidelines. ENERGY STAR qualified homes include a variety of 'tried-and-true' energy-efficient features that contribute to improved home quality and homeowner comfort, and to lower energy demand and reduced air pollution. Independent ENERGY STAR raters conduct onsite testing and inspections to verify the energy efficiency measures used to qualify to the ENERGY STAR rating.

How can W | A Associates help you earn an ENERGY STAR rating?

W | A Associates has the knowledge and experience to help clients develop cost-effective, energy-efficient solutions to their building needs through careful design decisions. The process for earning an ENERGY STAR rating is as follows:

  1. A building owner contracts with W | A Associates to determine their project goals

  2. W | A Associates develops new building or remodel plans designed to earn the ENERGY STAR label. W | A Associates will focus  on the most cost-effective use of energy-efficient measures and materials, such as high-performance doors and windows, tightly-sealed ducts, properly-installed insulation, efficient heating and cooling systems, and the use of energy-efficient products such as light bulbs and appliances.

  3. W | A Associates will coordinate with an independent ENERGY STAR rater who will review the plans, and certify that the building has been designed to earn the rating. (Buildings designed to earn ENERGY STAR ratings are roughly 20-30% more efficient than standard buildings.)

  4. Once built, W | A Associates will work with an independent ENERGY STAR rater who will perform onsite testing and inspections to verify that the final building qualifies for the ENERGY STAR rating.
